Saving lion Ariel

In most cases Facebook is used to keep in touch with friends and relatives, to follow the latest developments from companies we like, to play games, etc.  There are also instances where social media, Facebook in particular, is being used to make a positive social and global impact. These days, there are plenty of charities and social causes that are benefiting from the use of modern technology.
Ariel is a three-year-old lion that he hurt himself still very young when playing with balloons. Today Ariel's symptoms are similar to those of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and Guillain-Barre syndrome, an autoimmune disorder that can cause paralysis.
Raquel Borges, the owner, said the $11,500 needed every month to pay for Ariel's treatment comes from donations. When the Facebook page was set up in May, they had less than five followers, because it was designed to inform people of Ariel's case not to ask for help, but then Raquel started asking for donations and the number of people following Ariel's case soared. Today nearly 43,000 people have clicked the "like" button and are contributing to keep Ariel in a good shape.
Once again Facebook is used towards a good cause, well done to all the ones who are keeping Ariel alive. More info, as well as ways to make donations, can be found on the website.

  2. A good cause? To spend $11,000 a month on keeping a lion as a pet? To be honest I think it's ugly enough buying special food for pet cats when two billion people are hungry, but this is ridiculous.

Maybe I'll start another campaign: put the cat to sleep, and give the money to save thousands of children instead...

  3. Very surprised by your comment Lino. Yes, saving an animal life is a good cause. The fact that two billion people are hungry, or others are displaced, or others are orphans does not mean we should not try and save animal lives. Don’t you agree? There would not be humans without animal kingdom.

The point of the post is different as this is an example of how Facebook can be really helpful in raising funds for social causes. Want to start your own FB campaign? I'll fully support you...;)

  4. Sorry, human lives are more important than animal lives. Especially just so someone can keep a wild animal as a pet. If someone wants to spend $130k a year on keeping a lion as a toy, **** them, frankly. Back over where the lion comes from, there are a couple of million people about to starve to death. Let the lion go off peacefully to lion heaven, and look after them brothers and sisters instead. 'Hakuna matata' that, mutha*****!

I do get the point about another use for social media though...and in that respect, another great and informative post, thanks! :)
