The importance of replying on social media

Has it happened to you that you posted a comment on someone’s profile or blog and you’re ignored?! I find amazing how many people, and companies, using social media don’t reply when someone comments on their posts or statuses.

If I comment on some brands’ pages I expect to be at least acknowledged.

Ignoring someone might equal to ignoring a customer and therefore lose him and potentially many others.
So here are a few reasons why replying is a must:

  • People want to feel that someone is listening
  • If someone has taken the time and effort to write a comment, say thank you, it shows good manners.
  • By responding you are building a relationship with them and they’ll keep coming back
  • If you respond they are much more likely to remember you/your business
  • By responding they are more likely to comment again
  • It makes them feel special
  • It builds your online reputation
  • It shows that a real person is monitoring the media, not a robot!
  • It encourages others to comment, knowing that they will get a response
  • It makes it look to others that you care (don't you?!)
  • You don’t know who their friends are and who is their circle of influence to make or break you
  • It makes you look like more of an expert in your area
  • It shows that you aren't all about the sell
Sometime people might ask difficult questions or leave tricky comments, so think well before replying. Having said that make sure you reply in a timely manner.

  1. Couldn't agree more it's absolutely crucial, interesting the other day someone comment on my fan page in bahasa Indonesia , Google translate didn't help so i kindly requested the commenter to post in English , the post that followed was also in Bahasa, now my Bahasa Indo isn't that great but i was called stupid! diplomacy in those annoying moments is also so crucial

  3. Couldn't agree more with your comments. Good manners in all areas of life are sadly dwindling. It never ceases to amaze me the arrogance of some people particularly in business, when a few good manners could assist them to land that sale/make another contact, and so increase their profits and their profile. It just isn't just beneficial in business either, as you say it's also necessary for networking in other areas of life. My grandmother used to say you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.

  4. Sometimes I wonder what’s the point of going social with online marketing if people are not actually engaging with those who are interested enough in their tweets, Facebook updates or blog. And yes, also good manners is something of the past i think.

  5. Mohammed; yes, diplomacy is also very important, especially in delicate situations.
MRanthrope; there's no such a thing as being too busy i think, we can always find a minute for the people who make an effort for us.
    Juls, agree with grandma..:)
Juan, not everyone got the point of social media, lots of people see it as another advertising channel while it is not!

  6. yes!! i agree...when people leave a comment on my blog...i may not comment back individually, but i DO leave a comment thanking EVERYONE who took the time...

sometimes it does bother me when i leave a comment on someone's blog...asking a question...and never hear back! now that's a bit rude i think!
