The Dehli Traffic Police recently joined Facebook and it seems they are getting a lot of help from the general public. Many people are reporting all sort of infractions, or areas to avoid because of traffic, non working signals, etc. Check out their page here.
I think this is a great service not only because it keeps citizens informed but also as a form to stop bad drivers as they have more chances of being caught and pay penalties.
Should the R.O.P. do the same?
All authorities should use some social network. They are cheap and easily reach people. I think the Indian Police is doing right.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't this encourage citizens to spy on each other? The soon you see that somebody is doing wrong (without knowing the reason) you nail him! Terrible....
ReplyDeleteIt's a good idea but i'm not sure it would work here; ever heard of wasta?
ReplyDeletei remember sometime ago Mashable had a similar article and they highlighted a police department in the USA which i don't remember the name now. The police seemed to be doing a good job, with lots of interaction and tips as well as cross posting on Twitter. I think social media can help a lot authorities everywhere in the world where everyone can be a better citizen and contribute for safer roads and cities.
ReplyDeleteAnon; i also believe authorities should use social media, but only if they can manage it properly. So maybe it'll take a while since not too many people can do it in a professional way.
ReplyDeleteDomino; on the contrary i think that this could encourage everyone to be a better citizen. Police usually use CCTV everywhere to track down baddies so social media, and people, could be an extra help.
Aalryiami; yes, heard of wasta which to me is a big problem here (but do not want to deepen the conversation on this topic).
Juan; i researched that article from Mashable and found it; that is probably a better example as the Florida Police seems to be doing a better job than the Dehli Police. So that just strengthen the point that social media can be used by authorities. Let's hope.
I would LOVE to be able to report people on the spot! Always seeing bad driving etc and knowing that people could report you so fast and with photo evidence to the police and the whole online community might act as a deterrent.
